„Out of Singapore“ is a 1932 pre-Code drama film directed by Charles Hutchison. The screenplay by Jack Natteford is based on a story by Frederick Chapin.

In Singapore, Captain Carroll, a merchant seaman, needs to hire a new First Mate for his three-masted cargo ship, the „Marigold,“ sailing the Manila-Singapore trade route.

Caroll hires the ruthless Woolf Barstow, a corrupt merchant marine officer whose track record includes the loss of three ships on which he was serving. Sunk, burned or disappeared. Barstow brings along his equally-unsavory confederate, „Scar“ Murray, as the Boatswain, who also has a reputation for sinking ships. That should have sent warning bells off, however, the captain seems to think that perhaps it’s all just due to bad luck. Nonetheless, theres no one else with a ticket, and so Carroll hires him, despite his daughter, Mary Carroll, being a passenger.

Bartsow intends to take over the ship, and also has his lustful eye on Mary.

After returning from three weeks at sea, they stop at the next port of call, and the captain dies from what Barstow describes as China fever. Barstow has actually poisoned the captain to gain control of his vessel. As part of his plot, Barstow drowns the second-mate, Miller.

As a replacement for the 2nd-mate, Barstow hires a derelict who is handy with his fists, Steve Trent, and Trent brings along his drunken-sot friend, Bloater, as the ship’s cook.

Trent has a fake cargo arranged by Wong, a Chinese merchant/restauranteur who operates a waterfront dive in Singapore where Barstow’s rejected lover, Concha Renaldo, is a a dancer. Barstow and his henchmen intend to blow the vessel while it is off the coast of Luzon in order to collect the insurance money on the cargo.

Concha, spurned by Barstow, boards the ship as a stowaway seeking vengeance, intent on stopping Barstow one way or another, and alerts the second-mate and Mary of Barstow’s plot.

As Barstow is about to sabotage the ship by igniting some dynamite, Concha locks him in a cabin, allowing the second-mate and Mary to escape unharmed. Concha then performs before the crew in the fore of the ship, dancing until the entire vessel explodes.

In Singapur muss Kapitän Carroll, ein Handelsseemann, einen neuen Ersten Offizier für sein Dreimast-Frachtschiff, die „Marigold“, anheuern, das auf der Handelsroute Manila-Singapur fährt.

Caroll heuert den skrupellosen Woolf Barstow an, einen korrupten Offizier der Handelsmarine, der bereits drei Schiffe verloren hat, auf denen er diente. Versenkt, verbrannt oder verschwunden. Barstow bringt seinen ebenso widerwärtigen Verbündeten „Scar“ Murray als Bootsmann mit, der ebenfalls dafür bekannt ist, Schiffe zu versenken. Das hätte eigentlich die Alarmglocken läuten lassen müssen, doch der Kapitän scheint zu glauben, dass es sich vielleicht nur um Pech handelt. Da niemand sonst eine Fahrkarte hat, heuert Carroll ihn an, obwohl seine Tochter Mary Carroll mitfährt.

Bartsow hat die Absicht, das Schiff zu übernehmen, und hat auch ein Auge auf Mary geworfen.

Nach der Rückkehr von drei Wochen auf See wird der nächste Hafen angelaufen, und der Kapitän stirbt an dem, was Barstow als Chinafieber bezeichnet. In Wirklichkeit hat Barstow den Kapitän vergiftet, um die Kontrolle über sein Schiff zu erlangen. Als Teil seines Plans ertränkt Barstow den zweiten Maat Miller.

Als Ersatz für den 2. Maat heuert Barstow einen heruntergekommenen Mann an, der gut mit den Fäusten umgehen kann, Steve Trent, und Trent bringt seinen versoffenen Freund Bloater als Schiffskoch mit.

Trent lässt eine falsche Ladung von Wong arrangieren, einem chinesischen Händler/Gastronomen, der in Singapur eine Hafenkneipe betreibt, in der Barstows abgewiesene Geliebte, Concha Renaldo, als Tänzerin arbeitet. Barstow und seine Handlanger wollen das Schiff vor der Küste von Luzon in die Luft jagen, um die Versicherungssumme für die Ladung zu kassieren.

Concha, die von Barstow verschmäht wurde, geht als blinder Passagier an Bord des Schiffes, um sich zu rächen und Barstow auf die eine oder andere Weise zu stoppen, und warnt den Zweiten Offizier und Mary vor Barstows Plan.

Als Barstow im Begriff ist, das Schiff zu sabotieren, indem er Dynamit zündet, sperrt Concha ihn in eine Kabine, so dass der Zweite Offizier und Mary unverletzt entkommen können. Concha tritt dann vor der Mannschaft im Vorschiff auf und tanzt, bis das ganze Schiff explodiert.
