„Shield For Murder“ is a 1954 film-noir crime film co-directed by Edmond O’Brien and Howard W. Koch. The screenplay by Richard Alan Simmons and John C. Higgins is based on the 1951 eponymous novel by William P. McGivern.

Veteran Police Lieutenant Barney Nolan has become corrupt and vicious. He fatally shoots a bookmaker, steals his $25,000, then claims he tried to escape custody. Sergeant Mark Brewster, his friend and protégé, believes this rogue cop, as does the Captain of Detectives, Captain Gunnarson. However, newspaper reporter Cabot suspects otherwise.

Barney takes his girlfriend, Patty Winters, to see a new house that is for sale, in which he suggests the two of them could have a happy life. He hides the money behind the home.

Packy Reed, the dead man’s boss, sends private investigators Fat Michaels and Laddie O’Neil to tell Barney he wants to see him. Packy gives Barney one chance to return the money, but Barney is uncooperative.

Deaf-mute Ernst Sternmuller witnessed the bookmaker’s murder. He goes to the police station with a note explaining what he saw, but gives it to Barney, whom he does not recognize as the killer. Barney later goes to the man’s apartment, pushes the old man, who strikes his head, and dies. Barney stages things to make it seem like an accident, unaware that Sternmuller had been writing a full account of the murder. Mark, investigating the death, finds this narrative.

Barney drinks and fends off a flirtatious blonde Giral at a bar. He calls Patty on the phone, and she reveals that Michaels and O’Neil had approached her menacingly. Enraged, he pistol whips them both into unconsciousness, while everyone else in the bar reacts hysterically.

Barney goes home. Mark is waiting to arrest him. The two men struggle and Barney knocks Mark out. Mark regains consciousness, takes the notepad with Sturnmuller’s account to his boss, Gunnarson, who initiates a manhunt.

Barney and Michaels shoot it out. Barney manages to kill the other man. The police converge on Barney. He shoots it out with them and manages to dig up the money, but as he emerges from the yard, he is confronted by several policemen. He fires at them, and they shoot him dead.

Der altgediente Polizeileutnant Barney Nolan ist korrupt und bösartig geworden. Er erschießt einen Buchmacher tödlich, stiehlt dessen 25.000 Dollar und behauptet dann, er habe versucht, aus dem Gewahrsam zu entkommen. Sergeant Mark Brewster, sein Freund und Schützling, glaubt diesem abtrünnigen Polizisten, ebenso wie der Captain of Detectives, Captain Gunnarson. Der Zeitungsreporter Cabot hat jedoch einen anderen Verdacht.

Barney nimmt seine Freundin Patty Winters mit, um ein neues Haus zu besichtigen, das zum Verkauf steht und in dem sie ein glückliches Leben führen könnten. Er versteckt das Geld hinter dem Haus.

Packy Reed, der Chef des Toten, schickt die Privatdetektive Fat Michaels und Laddie O’Neil, um Barney zu sagen, dass er ihn sehen will. Packy gibt Barney eine Chance, das Geld zurückzugeben, aber Barney zeigt sich unkooperativ.

Der taubstumme Ernst Sternmüller ist Zeuge des Mordes an dem Buchmacher. Er geht mit einem Zettel zur Polizeiwache, um zu erklären, was er gesehen hat, gibt ihn aber Barney, den er nicht als den Mörder erkennt. Barney geht später in die Wohnung des Mannes, stößt den alten Mann, der sich den Kopf stößt, und stirbt. Barney inszeniert alles so, dass es wie ein Unfall aussieht, ohne zu wissen, dass Sternmuller einen ausführlichen Bericht über den Mord geschrieben hatte. Mark, der den Todesfall untersucht, findet diese Erzählung.

Barney trinkt und wehrt in einer Bar eine flirtende blonde Giral ab. Er ruft Patty an, die ihm offenbart, dass Michaels und O’Neil sich ihr bedrohlich genähert haben. Wütend peitscht er die beiden mit einer Pistole in die Bewusstlosigkeit, während alle anderen in der Bar hysterisch reagieren.

Barney geht nach Hause. Mark wartet darauf, ihn zu verhaften. Die beiden Männer kämpfen, und Barney schlägt Mark bewusstlos. Mark kommt wieder zu sich und bringt den Notizblock mit Sturnmullers Bericht zu seinem Chef Gunnarson, der eine Fahndung einleitet.

Barney und Michaels liefern sich einen Schusswechsel. Barney gelingt es, den anderen Mann zu töten. Die Polizei stürzt sich auf Barney. Er liefert sich einen Schusswechsel mit ihnen und schafft es, das Geld auszugraben, aber als er aus dem Hof herauskommt, wird er von mehreren Polizisten konfrontiert. Er schießt auf sie, und sie erschießen ihn.
