The Reckless Moment (1949)

„The Reckless Moment“ is a 1949 film-noir melodrama film directed by Max Ophüls. The screenplay by Henry Garson and Robert Soderberg, Mel Dinelli (adaptation) and Robert E. Kent (adaptation) is based on the story „The Blank Wall“ by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding published in „Ladies’ Home Journal“.

Without telling her family, Lucia Harper drives from her seaside home in Balboa to Los Angeles to warn rogue scoundrel Ted Darby to stay away from her seventeen-year-old daughter, Beatrice „Bea“ Harper. When Darby agrees to leave Bea alone for a price, Lucia refuses to pay him off, convinced that her daughter will have no interest in a man who would accept that kind of money.

Back in Balboa, Bea has already spoken to Darby on the phone, does not believe her mother’s story and refuses to stop seeing him. Lucia, whose husband, Tom Harper is out of town, must handle this problem without his help and forbids Bea to return to art school in Los Angeles.

That night, Bea sneaks out of the house and meets Darby in the boathouse, but when he admits that he did ask for money, she strikes out at him in anger with her flashlight. Dazed, Darby stumbles, and is killed when he falls on top of an anchor. Lucia discovers her distraught daughter, sends her back to bed, and dumps Darby’s body in the bay along with the anchor that killed him.

Darby’s body is found. Martin Donnelly comes to the house and offers to sell Lucia love letters that Bea wrote to Darby.

Donnelly becomes enamored by Lucia, and tells her that if she can raise enough to pay his partner Nagle, he won’t take his share of the money. Lucia pawns her jewelry, and gives Donnelly the money. One of Darby’s shady associates has been arrested for Darby’s murder. Lucia is upset, knowing the man to be innocent, and tells Donnelly that she killed Darby. Donnelly does not believe her, however, and advises her that even if the arrested man did not commit the murder, he is guilty of many other crimes.

Believing herself to be free of the blackmail threat, Lucia is stunned to discover that Nagle has come to her house to demand his payment. Donnelly overhears their argument and fights with Nagle, killing him. Lucia wants to tell the police everything, but Donnelly stops her, explaining that her resemblance to his mother has made him want to behave decently for the first time, and, he runs away with the body. Lucia and her maid, Sybil, follow and see Donnelly crash the car into a post. When Lucia tries to help, Donnelly hands her Bea’s letters and tells her the police will think that Nagle was killed in the accident. He sends a brokenhearted Lucia away, and later she learns that before he died, Donnelly confessed to Darby’s murder.

In dieser Nacht schleicht sich Bea aus dem Haus und trifft Darby im Bootshaus. Als er jedoch zugibt, dass er Geld verlangt hat, schlägt sie wütend mit ihrer Taschenlampe auf ihn ein. Benommen stolpert Darby und wird getötet, als er auf einen Anker fällt. Lucia entdeckt ihre verzweifelte Tochter, schickt sie zurück ins Bett und wirft Darbys Leiche zusammen mit dem Anker, der ihn getötet hat, in die Bucht.

Darbys Leiche wird gefunden. Martin Donnelly kommt zum Haus und bietet Lucia an, die Liebesbriefe zu verkaufen, die Bea an Darby geschrieben hat.

Donnelly ist in Lucia verliebt und sagt ihr, dass er seinen Teil des Geldes nicht annehmen wird, wenn sie genug Geld aufbringen kann, um seinen Partner Nagle zu bezahlen. Lucia verpfändet ihren Schmuck und gibt Donnelly das Geld. Einer von Darbys zwielichtigen Partnern wurde wegen Darbys Mordes verhaftet. Lucia ist aufgebracht, da sie weiß, dass der Mann unschuldig ist, und erzählt Donnelly, dass sie Darby getötet hat. Donnelly glaubt ihr jedoch nicht und weist sie darauf hin, dass der Verhaftete, auch wenn er den Mord nicht begangen hat, vieler anderer Verbrechen schuldig ist.

Lucia glaubt, von der Erpressungsdrohung befreit zu sein, und ist verblüfft, als sie erfährt, dass Nagle zu ihrem Haus gekommen ist, um seine Bezahlung zu fordern. Donnelly belauscht den Streit der beiden, kämpft mit Nagle und tötet ihn. Lucia will der Polizei alles erzählen, aber Donnelly hält sie davon ab, indem er ihr erklärt, ihre Ähnlichkeit mit seiner Mutter habe ihn dazu gebracht, sich zum ersten Mal anständig zu benehmen, und er flieht mit der Leiche. Lucia und ihr Dienstmädchen Sybil folgen ihm und sehen, wie Donnelly mit dem Auto gegen einen Pfosten fährt. Als Lucia zu helfen versucht, übergibt Donnelly ihr Beas Briefe und sagt ihr, die Polizei werde denken, dass Nagle bei dem Unfall ums Leben gekommen sei. Er schickt eine gebrochene Lucia weg, und später erfährt sie, dass Donnelly vor seinem Tod den Mord an Darby gestanden hat.
