„We Were Strangers“ is a 1949 adventure drama film directed by John Huston. The screenplay by John Huston, Peter Viertel and Ben Hecht is based on the 1948 novel „Rough Sketch“ by Robert Sylvester.

In 1933, American citizen John Garfield returns to his native Cuba to join his people’s revolution. Knowing that some government officials are about to attend a funeral, Garfield plans to assassinate them by detonating explosives hidden in a cemetery. Things fall apart when officials change the location of the funeral, and the police descend on the revolutionaries.

Im Jahr 1933 kehrt der amerikanische Staatsbürger John Garfield in seine Heimat Kuba zurück, um sich der Revolution seines Volkes anzuschließen. Da er weiß, dass einige Regierungsbeamte an einer Beerdigung teilnehmen werden, plant Garfield ein Attentat auf sie, indem er auf einem Friedhof versteckten Sprengstoff zündet. Die Sache geht schief, als die Beamten den Ort der Beerdigung ändern und die Polizei auf die Revolutionäre losgeht.
