„Night Tide“ is a 1961 independent fantasy film written and directed by Curtis Harrington.

Johnny Drake, a sailor on shore leave in Santa Monica, meets Mora in a local jazz club. Mora makes her living on the pier appearing as a mermaid in a sideshow attraction under the name ”Mora the Mermaid“, a ”half-woman, half-fish“, on the boardwalk, operated by Captain Samuel Murdock. Captain Murdock is her godfather and he found his ”ward“ as an orphan living on the Greek island of Mykonos. Johnny becomes acquainted with the merry-go-round operator and his granddaughter Ellen Sands, who warns Johnny that Mora may be dangerous, as her two previous boyfriends both drowned under mysterious circumstances.

As Mora and Johnny become closer, Mora tells him that she believes she is a siren, one of the legendary creatures who lure sailors to their deaths under the influence of the moon. Johnny witnesses Mora being followed by a mysterious black-clad woman, the ”Sea Witch“ whom she believes is one of the sirens, calling her to return to the sea to fulfill her destiny. During a scuba dive on the day of the full moon, Mora cuts Johnny’s air hose, apparently attempting to drown him. He is forced to the surface. She swims out to sea and disappears.

Johnny is devastated, but returns to the boardwalk the following evening and goes to the sideshow, where he finds Captain Murdock at the entrance as usual. Peering into the mermaid tank, he sees Mora’s corpse on display. Captain Murdock appears brandishing a gun, admitting to Johnny that he killed Mora’s boyfriends because he could not bear the thought of her leaving him. Murdock fires at Johnny, but misses. The gunshots attract the attention of two policemen on the boardwalk, and Murdock and Johnny are taken into custody.

At the police station, Murdock confesses, saying he found and adopted Mora when she was a young orphan. He planted the idea that she was a mermaid, incapable of living the life of a normal woman, in her head as a way of binding her to him forever. When she matured and began to attract male attention, Murdock murdered the men she grew close to and let Mora think that she had caused their deaths. However, Murdock denies any knowledge of the strange figure Mora believed to be a siren.

As Johnny’s shore leave ends, Ellen, who has taken an interest in him, visits the police station to bid him goodbye. He tells her that he will try to return in the future.

Johnny Drake, ein Seemann auf Landgang in Santa Monica, lernt Mora in einem örtlichen Jazzclub kennen. Mora verdient ihren Lebensunterhalt am Pier, wo sie als Meerjungfrau in einer von Kapitän Samuel Murdock betriebenen Nebenattraktion unter dem Namen „Mora the Mermaid“ (halb Frau, halb Fisch) auf der Strandpromenade auftritt. Kapitän Murdock ist ihr Patenonkel, der sein „Mündel“ als Waisenkind auf der griechischen Insel Mykonos fand. Johnny lernt den Karussellbetreiber und seine Enkelin Ellen Sands kennen, die ihn warnt, dass Mora gefährlich sein könnte, da ihre beiden früheren Freunde beide unter mysteriösen Umständen ertrunken sind.

Als Mora und Johnny sich näher kommen, erzählt Mora ihm, dass sie glaubt, eine Sirene zu sein, eine der legendären Kreaturen, die unter dem Einfluss des Mondes Seeleute in den Tod locken. Johnny wird Zeuge, wie Mora von einer geheimnisvollen schwarz gekleideten Frau, der „Meerhexe“, verfolgt wird, die sie für eine der Sirenen hält und sie auffordert, ins Meer zurückzukehren, um ihr Schicksal zu erfüllen. Während eines Tauchgangs am Tag des Vollmonds schneidet Mora Johnnys Luftschlauch durch und versucht offenbar, ihn zu ertränken. Er wird an die Oberfläche gezwungen. Sie schwimmt auf das Meer hinaus und verschwindet.

Johnny ist am Boden zerstört, kehrt aber am nächsten Abend an die Strandpromenade zurück und geht zur Nebenattraktion, wo er wie üblich Kapitän Murdock am Eingang findet. Als er in das Meerjungfrauenbecken blickt, sieht er Moras Leiche ausgestellt. Kapitän Murdock erscheint mit einer Pistole in der Hand und gesteht Johnny, dass er Moras Freunde getötet hat, weil er den Gedanken nicht ertragen konnte, dass sie ihn verlassen hat. Murdock feuert auf Johnny, verfehlt ihn aber. Die Schüsse erregen die Aufmerksamkeit von zwei Polizisten auf der Promenade, und Murdock und Johnny werden festgenommen.

Auf der Polizeiwache gesteht Murdock, dass er Mora als junges Waisenkind gefunden und adoptiert hat. Er pflanzte ihr die Idee ein, dass sie eine Meerjungfrau sei, unfähig, das Leben einer normalen Frau zu führen, um sie für immer an ihn zu binden. Als sie erwachsen wurde und die Aufmerksamkeit der Männer auf sich zog, ermordete Murdock die Männer, denen sie nahe stand, und ließ Mora glauben, dass sie deren Tod verursacht hatte. Murdock leugnet jedoch jede Kenntnis der seltsamen Gestalt, die Mora für eine Sirene hielt.

Als Johnnys Landgang zu Ende geht, besucht Ellen, die sich für ihn interessiert hat, das Polizeirevier, um sich von ihm zu verabschieden. Er sagt ihr, dass er versuchen wird, in der Zukunft zurückzukehren.
