„The Iron Mask“ is a 1929 part-talkie adventure film directed by Allan Dwan. The screenplay by Douglas Fairbanks and Jack Cunningham is based on the 1845/46 novel „Le Vicomte de Bragelonne ou L’homme au masque de fer“ by Alexandre Dumas, père, which is itself based on the French legend of the Man in the Iron Mask (L’Homme au Masque de Fer), an unidentified prisoner of state during the reign of Louis XIV of France (1643–1715).

King Louis XIII of France is thrilled when his son is born – an heir to the throne. But his Queen has actually delivered twin boys. Cardinal Richelieu sees the second son as a potential for revolution, and has him sent off to Spain to be raised in secret to ensure a peaceful future for France. Alas, keeping the secret means sending Constance, lover of D’Artagnan, off to a convent. D’Artagnan hears of this and rallies the Musketeers in a bid to rescue her. Unfortunately, Richelieu outsmarts the Musketeers and banishes them forever. Richelieu enlists D’Artagnan to look after and protect the young prince. Meanwhile, de Rochefort learns of the twins and Richelieu’s plans, and kidnaps the twin, raising him in secret. Many years later, with Richelieu dead and the young prince crowned King Louis XIV, Rochefort launches his plan. The king is kidnapped, replaced with his twin, put in an iron mask so as not to be recognized, and led off to a remote castle to be held prisoner. Louis XIV is able to alert D’Artagnan, who realizes that only his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis can help him, so he reunites the Musketeers to derail Rochefort’s nefarious plot but at a heavy toll. „Die eiserne Maske“ (The Iron Mask) ist ein Abenteuerfilm aus dem Jahr 1929 unter der Regie von Allan Dwan. Das Drehbuch von Douglas Fairbanks und Jack Cunningham basiert auf dem 1845/46 erschienenen Roman „Le Vicomte de Bragelonne ou L’homme au masque de fer“ von Alexandre Dumas der Ältere, der seinerseits auf der französischen Legende vom Mann in der eisernen Maske (L’Homme au Masque de Fer) basiert, einem nicht identifizierten Staatsgefangenen während der Herrschaft von Ludwig XIV. von Frankreich (1643-1715).

König Ludwig XIII. von Frankreich ist überglücklich, als sein Sohn geboren wird – ein Thronfolger. Doch seine Königin hat in Wirklichkeit Zwillinge zur Welt gebracht. Kardinal Richelieu sieht im zweiten Sohn das Potenzial für eine Revolution und schickt ihn nach Spanien, wo er heimlich aufgezogen werden soll, um eine friedliche Zukunft für Frankreich zu gewährleisten. Um das Geheimnis zu wahren, muss Constance, die Geliebte von D’Artagnan, in ein Kloster geschickt werden. D’Artagnan erfährt davon und schart die Musketiere um sich, um sie zu retten. Leider überlistet Richelieu die Musketiere und verbannt sie für immer. Richelieu beauftragt D’Artagnan, sich um den jungen Prinzen zu kümmern und ihn zu beschützen. In der Zwischenzeit erfährt de Rochefort von den Zwillingen und Richelieus Plänen, entführt den Zwilling und zieht ihn im Geheimen auf. Viele Jahre später, als Richelieu tot ist und der junge Prinz zum König Ludwig XIV. gekrönt wurde, führt Rochefort seinen Plan aus. Der König wird entführt, durch seinen Zwilling ersetzt, mit einer eisernen Maske versehen, um nicht erkannt zu werden, und in ein abgelegenes Schloss gebracht, wo er gefangen gehalten wird. Ludwig XIV. gelingt es, D’Artagnan zu alarmieren, der erkennt, dass nur seine Freunde Athos, Porthos und Aramis ihm helfen können, und so bringt er die Musketiere wieder zusammen, um Rocheforts ruchlosen Plan zu vereiteln – allerdings unter hohem Einsatz.
