„Carnival of Souls“ is a 1962 psychological horror film and directed by Herk Harvey, who also wrote the screenplay together with John Clifford.

In Kansas, Mary Henry rides with two young women who flirt with danger by accepting a reckless road-race challenge from a man. The race ends abruptly as their car is struck and plunges off a bridge into a river. After hours of searching, Mary inexplicably emerges alive from the muddy water, shaken and unable to explain her survival, while the fate of the others is left grimly assumed.

Seeking a fresh start, Mary relocates to Salt Lake City to work as a church organist. On the drive through the desert her radio fills with unearthly organ music, and she glimpses a pale, corpse-like stranger known only as The Man. She also becomes fixated on a decaying pavilion beside the Great Salt Lake, learning from a gas station attendant that it once served as a bathhouse, dance hall, and carnival before being abandoned. Mary rents a room from a prim landlady and encounters the house’s only other tenant, John Linden, whose awkward friendliness unsettles her.

At church Mary meets the minister, but her isolation deepens as she begins slipping into disturbing episodes in which she is unseen and unheard by everyone around her. The Man appears repeatedly, silently watching her, and Mary seeks reassurance from Dr. Samuels, who admits he is unqualified to treat her growing terror. During organ practice, Mary drifts into a trance, playing dissonant music and envisioning The Man and other ghouls dancing wildly at the pavilion. Horrified, the minister condemns the music as blasphemous and demands her resignation.

Lonely and frightened, Mary briefly leans on John for companionship, but when she confesses her visions he retreats, convinced she is unraveling. Feeling irresistibly drawn to the pavilion, Mary attempts to flee town by bus, only to discover the passengers are ghouls like those from her visions. Awakening in her car, she returns to the lakeshore, where the dead gather in a macabre dance and a ghostly double of Mary partners with The Man. She runs, collapses on the beach, and is overtaken.

The next day investigators find Mary’s footprints ending abruptly in the sand. The final revelation returns to Kansas, where the submerged car is raised from the river. Mary’s corpse is found inside with the other women, revealing that her escape was an illusion and that she has been dead since the crash.

In Kansas fährt Mary Henry mit zwei jungen Frauen mit, die sich auf ein gefährliches Abenteuer einlassen, indem sie die Herausforderung eines Mannes zu einem rücksichtslosen Straßenrennen annehmen. Das Rennen endet abrupt, als ihr Auto angefahren wird und von einer Brücke in einen Fluss stürzt. Nach stundenlanger Suche taucht Mary unerklärlicherweise lebend aus dem schlammigen Wasser auf, erschüttert und unfähig, ihr Überleben zu erklären, während das Schicksal der anderen düster vermutet wird.

Auf der Suche nach einem Neuanfang zieht Mary nach Salt Lake City, um dort als Kirchenorganistin zu arbeiten. Auf der Fahrt durch die Wüste ertönt aus ihrem Radio unheimliche Orgelmusik, und sie erblickt einen blassen, leichenähnlichen Fremden, der nur als „The Man“ bekannt ist. Außerdem ist sie fasziniert von einem verfallenen Pavillon am Great Salt Lake und erfährt von einem Tankstellenwart, dass dieser einst als Badehaus, Tanzsaal und Karnevalssaal diente, bevor er aufgegeben wurde. Mary mietet ein Zimmer bei einer spröden Vermieterin und trifft dort auf den einzigen anderen Mieter des Hauses, John Linden, dessen unbeholfene Freundlichkeit sie verunsichert.

In der Kirche trifft Mary den Pfarrer, doch ihre Isolation vertieft sich, als sie in beunruhigende Episoden abgleitet, in denen sie von niemandem in ihrer Umgebung gesehen oder gehört wird. Der Mann taucht immer wieder auf und beobachtet sie schweigend. Mary sucht Trost bei Dr. Samuels, der jedoch zugibt, dass er nicht qualifiziert ist, ihre wachsende Angst zu behandeln. Während des Orgelunterrichts verfällt Mary in Trance, spielt dissonante Musik und sieht den Mann und andere Ghule, die wild im Pavillon tanzen. Entsetzt verurteilt der Pfarrer die Musik als blasphemisch und verlangt ihren Rücktritt.

Einsam und verängstigt sucht Mary kurzzeitig Trost bei John, doch als sie ihm von ihren Visionen erzählt, zieht er sich zurück, überzeugt davon, dass sie den Verstand verliert. Mary fühlt sich unwiderstehlich zum Pavillon hingezogen und versucht, mit dem Bus aus der Stadt zu fliehen, muss jedoch feststellen, dass die Fahrgäste Ghule sind, wie sie sie aus ihren Visionen kennt. Als sie in ihrem Auto aufwacht, kehrt sie zum Seeufer zurück, wo sich die Toten zu einem makabren Tanz versammeln und ein geisterhaftes Doppelgängerin von Mary sich mit dem Mann zusammentut. Sie rennt davon, bricht am Strand zusammen und wird überwältigt.

Am nächsten Tag finden Ermittler Marys Fußspuren, die abrupt im Sand enden. Die letzte Enthüllung kehrt nach Kansas zurück, wo das versunkene Auto aus dem Fluss geborgen wird. Marys Leiche wird zusammen mit den anderen Frauen darin gefunden, was offenbart, dass ihre Flucht eine Illusion war und sie seit dem Unfall tot ist.
