“Devil and the Deep” is a 1932 pre-Code drama film directed by Marion Gering, screenplay by Benn W. Levy, story by Harry Hervey, based on Maurice Larrouy’s 1927 novel, “Sirenes et Tritons”.

Commander Charles Sturm is a respected submarine officer whose obsessive jealousy has poisoned his marriage to Diana Sturm. Convinced that every man is a rival, Sturm constantly watches and interrogates his wife. His suspicions focus on Lieutenant Jaeckel, a young officer serving under him. Although there is no romance between Diana and Jaeckel, Sturm becomes convinced they are lovers and uses his authority to have Jaeckel transferred. Other figures in the story include Hassan, Hutton, Lieutenant Toll, Condover, Mr. Planet, Mrs. Planet, and Mrs. Crimp.

After another violent outburst in which Sturm strikes Diana, she flees during a local festival. There she meets Lieutenant Sempter, the officer assigned to replace Jaeckel aboard Sturm’s submarine. Lonely and emotionally exhausted, Diana is drawn to Sempter, and the two begin a genuine romance. When Sturm discovers the affair, his jealousy turns into madness. Determined to punish both Diana and Sempter, he begins plotting revenge.

On the night the submarine is scheduled to depart, Diana secretly boards the vessel hoping to warn Sempter about Sturm’s unstable state of mind. Before she can leave, Sturm arrives and immediately orders the submarine out to sea. Once underway, he deliberately steers the vessel into the path of an approaching ship. The collision sinks the submarine and traps the crew on the ocean floor. Although many compartments flood, the surviving officers and sailors gather in the control room.

As panic spreads, Sturm and Sempter battle for authority. Diana reveals the extent of Sturm’s mental instability, convincing the crew that their commander can no longer be trusted. Sempter takes command and organizes an escape. Using Momsen lungs and the submarine’s escape trunk, the crew ascends safely to the surface and is rescued. Sturm refuses to abandon the submarine. Completely consumed by insanity, he remains behind and opens a watertight door, allowing seawater to flood the vessel while he laughs maniacally.

In the aftermath, Sempter faces a court-martial but is cleared of serious wrongdoing. Later, he unexpectedly encounters Diana on a city street. With Sturm gone and the tragedy behind them, the two leave together in a cab as rain begins to fall, suggesting the start of a new life together.

Entschlossen, sowohl Diana als auch Sempter zu bestrafen, beginnt er, Rachepläne zu schmieden.

In der Nacht, in der das U-Boot auslaufen soll, geht Diana heimlich an Bord, in der Hoffnung, Sempter vor Sturms labilem Geisteszustand zu warnen. Bevor sie das Schiff verlassen kann, erscheint Sturm und befiehlt sofort, das U-Boot auf See zu bringen. Sobald sie unterwegs sind, steuert er das Schiff absichtlich in die Bahn eines herannahenden Schiffes. Durch die Kollision sinkt das U-Boot, und die Besatzung sitzt auf dem Meeresgrund fest. Obwohl viele Abteilungen voll Wasser laufen, versammeln sich die überlebenden Offiziere und Matrosen im Kontrollraum.

Während sich Panik ausbreitet, kämpfen Sturm und Sempter um die Befehlsgewalt. Diana enthüllt das Ausmaß von Sturms geistiger Instabilität und überzeugt die Besatzung davon, dass ihrem Kommandanten nicht mehr zu trauen ist. Sempter übernimmt das Kommando und organisiert eine Flucht. Mithilfe von Momsen-Lungen und dem Fluchtkorb des U-Boots steigt die Besatzung sicher an die Oberfläche auf und wird gerettet. Sturm weigert sich, das U-Boot zu verlassen. Völlig vom Wahnsinn beherrscht, bleibt er zurück und öffnet eine wasserdichte Tür, wodurch Meerwasser das Schiff überflutet, während er manisch lacht.

In der Folge muss sich Sempter vor ein Kriegsgericht stellen, wird jedoch von schwerwiegendem Fehlverhalten freigesprochen. Später begegnet er Diana unerwartet auf einer Straße in der Stadt. Da Sturm nicht mehr da ist und die Tragödie hinter ihnen liegt, fahren die beiden gemeinsam in einem Taxi davon, während es zu regnen beginnt – ein Hinweis auf den Beginn eines neuen gemeinsamen Lebens.
