„Sounder“ is a 1972 drama film directed by Martin Ritt and adapted by Lonne Elder III from the 1969 novel of the same name by William H. Armstrong.
The oldest son of a loving and strong family of black sharecroppers comes of age in the Depression-era South after his father is imprisoned for stealing food.
The Morgans, a loving and strong family of Black sharecroppers in Louisiana in 1933, face a serious family crisis when the husband and father, Nathan Lee Morgan, is convicted of a petty crime and sent to a prison camp. After some weeks or months, the wife and mother, Rebecca Morgan, sends the oldest son, who is about 11 years old, to visit his father at the camp. The journey becomes something of an odyssey for the boy. During the journey, he stays a little while with a dedicated Black schoolteacher.

Die Morgans, eine liebevolle und starke Familie schwarzer Farmpächter in Louisiana im Jahr 1933, stehen vor einer schweren Familienkrise, als der Ehemann und Vater, Nathan Lee Morgan, wegen eines Bagatelldelikts verurteilt und in ein Gefangenenlager geschickt wird. Nach einigen Wochen oder Monaten schickt die Ehefrau und Mutter, Rebecca Morgan, den ältesten Sohn, der etwa 11 Jahre alt ist, zu seinem Vater in das Lager. Die Reise wird für den Jungen zu einer Art Odyssee. Während der Reise bleibt er eine Weile bei einer engagierten schwarzen Lehrerin.
