Gung Ho! The Story of Carlson’s Makin Island Raiders (1943)

„Gung Ho! The Story of Carlson’s Makin Island Raiders“ is a 1943 war film directed by Ray Enright. The screenplay by Lucien Hubbard is based on the Saturday Evening Post story „We Mopped Up Makin Island“ by Lt. W.S. LeFrancois U.S.M.C.

Seven weeks after Pearl Harbor, volunteers form the new 2nd Marine Raider Battalion whose purpose is to raid Japanese-held islands. The men selected come from different walks of life but have toughness in common. Under command of Colonel „Thorwald“, they’re trained in all imaginable forms of combat. Then, after a perilous submarine journey, they face a daunting first mission: to annihilate the much larger Japanese garrison on Makin Island, in a lengthy battle sequence.

Sieben Wochen nach Pearl Harbor bilden Freiwillige das neue 2. Marine Raider Battalion, dessen Aufgabe es ist, von Japanern gehaltene Inseln zu überfallen. Die ausgewählten Männer kommen aus unterschiedlichen Gesellschaftsschichten, haben aber alle die gleiche Härte. Unter dem Kommando von Colonel „Thorwald“ werden sie in allen erdenklichen Formen des Kampfes ausgebildet. Nach einer gefährlichen U-Boot-Fahrt stehen sie dann vor ihrer ersten entmutigenden Mission: die Vernichtung der weitaus größeren japanischen Garnison auf Makin Island in einer langwierigen Kampfsequenz.
