“King of the Cowboys” is a 1943 Western film directed by Joseph Kane, written by Olive Cooper and J. Benton Cheney, based on a story by Hal Long.

While appearing in a Texas Rodeo, during World War II, Roy Rogers receives an unexpected summons from Governor Shuville, who asks him to undertake a dangerous undercover assignment. A ring of wartime saboteurs is operating within the state, threatening the nation’s security, and the Governor believes Roy’s popularity and resourcefulness make him the ideal man to infiltrate the organization. Accompanied by his comic sidekick Frog Millhouse, Roy agrees to risk his life in order to uncover the conspiracy before more damage can be done.

Following the Governor’s instructions, Roy and Frog join a traveling entertainment show where the saboteurs are believed to be hiding. Among its performers is the mysterious Maurice, the Mental Marvel. His seemingly supernatural mind-reading act conceals a far more sinister purpose. Roy soon discovers that Maurice secretly receives coded messages through a hidden radio receiver, allowing the saboteurs to receive information without attracting suspicion. As Roy gathers evidence, he realizes the entire troupe has become a convenient cover for the enemy agents’ operations.

Roy’s investigation brings him into contact with Judy Mason, whose father Dave Mason becomes caught up in the growing danger, as well as Ruby Smith, William Kraley, the Governor’s secretary, Alf Cluckus (Irving Bacon), and the ruthless henchman Buxton. As the net closes around Maurice’s organization, the criminals discover Roy’s true mission and move quickly to eliminate him before he can expose their sabotage network.
Captured by the gang, Roy is tied up inside a warehouse rigged with explosives and barely escapes before the building is destroyed. Maurice then murders one of his own associates and successfully frames Roy for the crime, leading to the cowboy’s arrest. While Roy struggles to prove his innocence from jail, Frog continues gathering evidence that exposes the saboteurs’ scheme.

In a climactic showdown, Roy escapes, confronts Maurice and his accomplices, and uncovers the entire conspiracy. The real killers are brought to justice, Roy is cleared of the murder charge, and the sabotage ring is finally destroyed. With Texas once again safe and the Governor’s faith fully justified, Roy and Frog ride off together, having protected both the state and the nation through courage, quick thinking, and unwavering patriotism.

Maurice ermordet daraufhin einen seiner eigenen Komplizen und schiebt Roy erfolgreich die Schuld für das Verbrechen in die Schuhe, was zur Verhaftung des Cowboys führt. Während Roy im Gefängnis darum kämpft, seine Unschuld zu beweisen, sammelt Frog weiter Beweise, die den Plan der Saboteure aufdecken.

In einem dramatischen Showdown gelingt Roy die Flucht, er konfrontiert Maurice und seine Komplizen und deckt die gesamte Verschwörung auf. Die wahren Mörder werden zur Rechenschaft gezogen, Roy wird vom Mordvorwurf freigesprochen und der Sabotage-Ring endgültig zerschlagen. Nachdem Texas wieder in Sicherheit ist und sich das Vertrauen des Gouverneurs voll und ganz bestätigt hat, reiten Roy und Frog gemeinsam davon, nachdem sie durch Mut, schnelle Auffassungsgabe und unerschütterlichen Patriotismus sowohl den Staat als auch die Nation beschützt haben.
