„The Idol Dancer“ is a 1920 silent South Seas drama film directed by D. W. Griffith. The screenplay by Stanner E.V. Taylor is based on the story „Blood of the Covenants“ by Gordon Ray Young.

A beautiful half-caste girl raised with the natives of a South Sea island, Mary, is the daughter of a French man and a Javanese mother and enjoys dancing. The South Sea natives call her „White Almond Flower“. Mary gradually arouses the passion of beachcomber Dan McGuire, a derelict and a drunkard. Dan was tossed off a passing ship for failing to work and only seeks to drink gin.

One day, a sickly young American, Walter Kincaid, the consumptive nephew of the island’s missionary, comes to the island mission in hopes of regaining his health and is staying with his missionary uncle, Reverend Franklyn Blythe, and his wife. Walter is an invalid, whose greatest moral offense has been kissing his cousin in a dark hallway.

Walter is attracted to Mary, and the native dancer uses his infatuation to inflame Dan’s jealousy.

A battle between the Reverend, a religious zealot, and his nephew ensues to see who will „civilize“ whom.

Walter’s sudden collapse brings both Mary and Dan to his bedside, and the two nonbelievers are so deeply moved by Walter’s Christian spirit that Mary throws her wooden idol into the sea while Dan renounces alcohol.

One day, while all of the island’s male inhabitants except Walter are away on a fishing trip, a band of slave traders attacks the village, and Walter beats the war drum, alerting the islanders. Dan and the others rush back to the village and, after rescuing the women, find Walter in the throes of death, having been felled by the slavers after a fierce hand-to-hand battle. His death sanctifies Dan and Mary’s love, and they are united in a Christian marriage.

Es kommt zu einem Kampf zwischen dem Reverend, einem religiösen Eiferer, und seinem Neffen, um herauszufinden, wer wen „zivilisieren“ wird.

Walters plötzlicher Zusammenbruch bringt sowohl Mary als auch Dan an sein Bett, und die beiden Ungläubigen sind von Walters christlichem Geist so tief bewegt, dass Mary ihr hölzernes Götzenbild ins Meer wirft und Dan dem Alkohol abschwört.

Eines Tages, als alle männlichen Inselbewohner außer Walter auf einem Angelausflug sind, greift eine Bande von Sklavenhändlern das Dorf an. Dan und die anderen eilen zurück ins Dorf und finden Walter, nachdem sie die Frauen gerettet haben, im Todeskampf, nachdem er von den Sklavenhändlern nach einem heftigen Nahkampf niedergeschlagen wurde. Sein Tod heiligt die Liebe von Dan und Mary, und sie gehen eine christliche Ehe ein.
