“A Perfect Murder” is a 1998 crime thriller film directed by Andrew Davis, written by Patrick Smith Kelly, based on the 1952 play “Dial M for Murder“ by Frederick Knott.

Emily Bradford Taylor, the young wife of entrepreneur Steven Taylor, is the heir to a $100 million fortune. She is unhappy in her relationship and cheats on her husband with painter David Shaw, who makes a living seducing rich women. Steven, who has taken out bank loans to engage in high-risk currency futures trading and is now unable to meet impending margin calls, is facing financial ruin. He discovers his wife's affair, contacts Shaw, and demands that he murder Emily. Steven would thus become the heir to Emily's fortune and could flee abroad. He blackmails Shaw with his criminal past. Steven has conducted extensive investigations into Shaw's previous frauds and confronts him with his true identity: Winston Lagrange. He also blackmails him with a fraud David committed in Florida, where he faces a long prison sentence. Steven gives Shaw a $100,000 down payment, with another $400,000 to be paid to Shaw after the deed is done.

Steven summons Shaw to his penthouse and meticulously explains his murder plan. He leaves his wife's apartment key in the stairwell. He instructs Shaw to unlock the door and kill Emily in the kitchen so that it looks like a burglary in which Emily surprised the perpetrator. He will be at his weekly poker game at that time and will have an alibi for the time of the crime. At 10 p.m., Steven would call home to lure Emily into the kitchen. However, the plan fails: Emily resists and stabs the masked intruder in self-defense, grabbing a meat thermometer and stabbing him in the carotid artery. When Steven comes home, he discovers that Emily is alive and the hitman is lying dead in a pool of blood in the kitchen. In a hurry, Steven makes signs of a break-in before the police arrive, takes the key he finds on the body, and hangs it back on his wife's key ring. When the police remove the mask from the body, it turns out that the dead man is not his rival, but an unknown man.

David recorded Steven planning the murder and passed the contract killing on to a friend he knows from prison. Now he is blackmailing Steven for the rest of the money. Emily notices that her apartment key no longer fits, even though the locks have not been changed, and upon inquiry learns that her husband is facing bankruptcy. She begins to suspect something is wrong. During a conversation with the investigating police detective, she manages to take a look at the file and find out the burglar's address.

She also learns that not a single key was found on him, not even a house key. She looks up the address and discovers that the dead man's house key is hanging on her own key ring. Her own key, on the other hand, has disappeared. When Emily confronts her husband about this, he admits to the manipulation, but convinces her that he wanted to protect her from the blackmailer David and therefore cannot go to the police now. In tears, Emily asks her husband for forgiveness. Steven hands David the money, but then receives a call from the travel agency intended for David, informing him of the train David plans to take to get away. He waits for him in the reserved train compartment, snatches his gun, and stabs him with a kitchen knife. He finds a postal receipt on David. David had sent Emily the incriminating tape in an envelope by courier. Steven manages to take the envelope before Emily can open it and puts the tape and David's gun in his safe.

While Steven is showering, Emily opens the safe and finds the tape. She surprises him as he is about to remove the apartment key from the stairwell. The burglar did not pocket it, but put it back immediately after unlocking the door. An open confrontation ensues. Steven attacks Emily, throws her to the ground, and intends to kill her. As Steven lunges at Emily again, she shoots him with the gun she also took from the safe. When the police learn everything, they consider her actions to be self-defense and let her go.

Der Wall-Street-Händler Steven Taylor ist mit der viel jüngeren Emily verheiratet. Unterdessen hat die verliebte Emily eine Affäre mit dem Künstler David Shaw, für den sie Steven verlassen möchte. Am nächsten Tag taucht Steven in Davids Atelier auf. Steven weiß nicht nur von der Affäre, sondern hat auch Davids Vergangenheit sorgfältig recherchiert. Seine wahre Identität ist Winston Lagrange, ein Ex-Sträfling, der reiche Frauen betrügt. Steven nimmt Emilys Hausschlüssel und versteckt ihn vor dem Dienstboteneingang ihrer luxuriösen Wohnung in Manhattan. David soll den Schlüssel benutzen, um in die Wohnung zu gelangen, sie zu töten und es wie einen missglückten Raubüberfall aussehen zu lassen. Bei seinem wöchentlichen Kartenspiel macht Steven eine Pause und ruft mit seinem Handy ein automatisiertes Banksystem an, um sein Alibi zu bestätigen, während er mit einem zweiten Telefon Emily anruft. Emily nimmt den Anruf in der Küche entgegen und wird von einem maskierten Angreifer angegriffen, sticht ihm jedoch mit einem Fleischthermometer in den Hals. Steven kehrt zurück, findet jedoch die Leiche des Angreifers. Er nimmt den Schlüssel von der Leiche, hängt ihn wieder an Emilys Schlüsselbund, beschädigt die Servicetür und legt dem Angreifer einen Schraubenzieher unter. Die NYPD trifft unter der Leitung von Detective Moe Karaman ein. Sie nehmen dem Angreifer die Maske ab, doch die Leiche ist nicht die von David.

Kurz darauf erhält Steven einen Anruf von David, der ihm eine Tonbandaufnahme vorspielt, auf der die beiden den Plan besprechen, Emily zu töten. Sie vereinbaren ein Treffen in einem lokalen Delikatessengeschäft, wo David die gesamten 500.000 Dollar verlangt, sonst würde er Steven anzeigen.

Emily wird misstrauisch und vertraut ihren Freunden an, dass Steven ihr gesamtes Vermögen von 100 Millionen Dollar geerbt hätte, wenn sie getötet worden wäre. Sie stellt heimlich Nachforschungen an und erfährt, dass Stevens extrem riskante Margin-Geschäfte an der Börse auffliegen. Wenn er nicht dringend genug Geld auftreibt, um den Saldo zu decken, sind sowohl Stevens Finanzen als auch seine Kreditwürdigkeit komplett ruiniert.

Als Emily außerdem erkennt, dass der Schlüssel an ihrem Schlüsselbund dem Angreifer gehört, konfrontiert sie Steven damit. Er erklärt ihr, dass David sie erpresst, indem er droht, Emily zu töten, und dass Steven ihn heimlich bezahlt hat, um sie vor Schaden zu bewahren. Als er den toten Angreifer in ihrer Küche sah, nahm er an, dass es David war, und nahm den Schlüssel aus seiner Tasche, um Emily vor einer Anklage wegen Mordes zu schützen. Trotz Emilys Tränen und Bitten besteht Steven liebevoll darauf, dass sie nicht die Polizei ruft.

Nach dem Geldwechsel tötet Steven David in einem Abteil eines Amtrak-Zugs und nimmt Davids Waffe und das Geld an sich. Im Sterben liegend verrät David lachend, dass er die Kassette per Kurierdienst an Emily geschickt hat. Steven eilt nach Hause und findet die Post noch ungeöffnet vor. Er versteckt das Geld, die Waffe und die Kassette in seinem Safe, bevor er duschen geht.

Emily konfrontiert ihn. Sie verrät ihm, dass sie alles weiß, da sie die Kassette im Safe gefunden und angehört hat, während er geduscht hat. Als sie sich abwendet, greift Steven sie an und schwört, dass sie ihn nur tot verlassen wird. Nach einem kurzen Kampf greift Emily nach Davids Waffe aus dem Safe und tötet Steven. NYPD-Detective Karaman tröstet später die untröstliche Emily und sagt ihr, sie solle sich keine Vorwürfe machen, da sie keine andere Wahl hatte, als Steven in Notwehr zu töten.
