“Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome” is a 1947 crime action mystery drama thriller film directed by John Rawlins, screenplay by Robertson White and Eric Taylor, from a story by William Graffis and Robert E. Kent, based on the cartoon strip “Dick Tracy“ (1931–1977) created by Chester Gould.

Just out of jail, Gruesome goes to the Hangman’s Knot saloon, where his old crime crony, Melody, is now playing piano. Gruesome takes him to a plastics manufacturer, where X-Ray and a mysterious mastermind are in possession of a secret formula and hatching a sinister plot.

Ignoring a warning not to touch anything, Gruesome sniffs the gas from a mysterious test tube; he escapes the toxic fumes but collapses upon returning to the Hangman’s Knot and is taken to the city morgue, where his body stiffens dramatically.

Dick Tracy is at headquarters speaking with college professor Dr. A. Tomic, a scientist who suspects someone has been following him. At the morgue, Tracy’s sidekick Pat has his back turned when Gruesome wakes up and knocks him out. Pat describes him to Tracy as looking a lot like the actor Boris Karloff (a gag cribbed from Arsenic and Old Lace).

At a bank where Tess Trueheart happens to be, Gruesome and Melody drop a grenade with the gas into a wastebasket; when it goes off, everyone but Tess freezes in place. They rob the place of more than $100,000 and shoot a cop on the sidewalk before Tracy and his men arrive. Gruesome demands half of the loot from X-Ray … or else.

Tracy tries to learn the secret of the formula from Dr. Tomic’s top assistant, Professor Learned, before going after Gruesome and his gang. Over the course of the film, Learned is shot dead, and Melody dies in a car accident. As an offhand comment, Tess quips “dead men tell no tales”, which gives Tracy an idea: since Gruesome will resort even to murder to keep his secret weapon a secret, if he thinks Melody is alive, he will hunt Melody down to prevent any leaks. Tracy decides to run a false flag operation: put out word that Melody has been captured alive, and pose as Melody hoping Gruesome will show up. Gruesome takes the bait and abducts what he thinks is Melody from the hospital. In a climactic shootout at the plastic factory, Tracy shoots Gruesome in the back.

Tracy retrieves one last gas grenade with the intent of analyzing the contents. Back at the office, in the closing scene, the grenade inadvertently goes off, freezing everyone in place just as Dick and Tess are about to kiss.

Kaum aus dem Gefängnis entlassen, begibt sich Gruesome in den Saloon „Hangman’s Knot“, wo seine alte Komplizin Melody nun Klavier spielt. Gruesome bringt ihn zu einem Kunststoffhersteller, wo X-Ray und ein mysteriöser Drahtzieher im Besitz einer geheimen Formel sind und einen finsteren Plan aushecken.

Gruesome ignoriert die Warnung, nichts anzufassen, und schnüffelt an dem Gas aus einem mysteriösen Reagenzglas. Er entkommt den giftigen Dämpfen, bricht jedoch bei seiner Rückkehr zum Hangman's Knot zusammen und wird in die städtische Leichenhalle gebracht, wo sein Körper dramatisch erstarrt.

Dick Tracy ist im Hauptquartier und spricht mit dem College-Professor Dr. A. Tomic, einem Wissenschaftler, der vermutet, dass ihm jemand folgt. In der Leichenhalle hat Tracys Sidekick Pat ihm den Rücken zugewandt, als Gruesome aufwacht und ihn niederschlägt. Pat beschreibt ihn Tracy als sehr ähnlich dem Schauspieler Boris Karloff (ein Gag, der aus Arsen und Spitzenhäubchen übernommen wurde).

In einer Bank, in der sich Tess Trueheart zufällig aufhält, werfen Gruesome und Melody eine Granate mit dem Gas in einen Papierkorb; als sie explodiert, erstarren alle außer Tess. Sie rauben mehr als 100.000 Dollar und erschießen einen Polizisten auf dem Bürgersteig, bevor Tracy und seine Männer eintreffen. Gruesome verlangt die Hälfte der Beute von X-Ray … oder sonst.

Tracy versucht, das Geheimnis der Formel von Dr. Tomics oberstem Assistenten, Professor Learned, zu erfahren, bevor sie sich auf die Suche nach Gruesome und seiner Bande macht. Im Laufe des Films wird Learned erschossen und Melody stirbt bei einem Autounfall. Als beiläufige Bemerkung witzelt Tess: „Tote erzählen keine Geschichten“, was Tracy auf eine Idee bringt: Da Gruesome sogar zu Mord bereit ist, um seine Geheimwaffe geheim zu halten, wird er Melody jagen, um jegliche Indiskretionen zu verhindern, wenn er glaubt, dass sie noch lebt. Tracy beschließt, eine falsche Fährte zu legen: Er verbreitet die Nachricht, dass Melody lebend gefangen genommen wurde, und gibt sich als Melody aus, in der Hoffnung, dass Gruesome auftaucht. Gruesome geht auf den Köder ein und entführt die vermeintliche Melody aus dem Krankenhaus. In einer dramatischen Schießerei in der Plastikfabrik schießt Tracy Gruesome in den Rücken.

Tracy holt eine letzte Gasgranate, um deren Inhalt zu analysieren. Zurück im Büro, in der Schlussszene, geht die Granate versehentlich los und lässt alle erstarren, gerade als Dick und Tess sich küssen wollen.
