„The birth of a race“ is a 1918 silent drama film directed by John W. Noble based on a screenplay by George F. Wheeler, Rudolph De Cordova, John W. Noble and Anthony Paul Kelly with intertitles from Tom Bret.

After a biblical and historical prologue, which describes the development of the idea of democracy through the creation of the world, the Flood, the crucifixion of Christ, the discovery of America, the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Civil War, the current threat to this idea from autocratic powers is dramatized. Fritz Schmidt, a German-American steel mill owner, and his son Oscar remain loyal to the Kaiser, while son George fights for the Allies. When the American army hospital where Louisa Schmidt works as a nurse is attacked by the Germans, Oscar, now a German soldier, attacks her and does not recognize his sister in the confusion. George, recovering in hospital, kills his brother and then returns home, where he finds his mother and a German spy fighting over some secret papers. George kills the spy, Fritz restores his loyalty to the Americans, and the family is reunited.

Nach einem biblischen und historischen Prolog, der die Entwicklung der Idee der Demokratie durch die Erschaffung der Welt, die Sintflut, die Kreuzigung Christi, die Entdeckung Amerikas, die Unterzeichnung der Unabhängigkeitserklärung und den Bürgerkrieg beschreibt, wird die aktuelle Bedrohung dieser Idee durch autokratische Mächte dramatisiert. Fritz Schmidt, ein deutsch-amerikanischer Stahlwerksbesitzer, und sein Sohn Oscar bleiben dem Kaiser treu, während Sohn George für die Alliierten kämpft. Als das amerikanische Armeelazarett, in dem Louisa Schmidt als Krankenschwester arbeitet, von den Deutschen angegriffen wird, greift Oscar, jetzt ein deutscher Soldat, sie an und erkennt in der Verwirrung seine Schwester nicht. George, der sich im Krankenhaus erholt, tötet seinen Bruder und kehrt dann nach Hause zurück, wo er seine Mutter und einen deutschen Spion im Streit um geheime Papiere findet. George tötet den Spion, Fritz stellt seine Loyalität zu den Amerikanern wieder her, und die Familie ist wieder vereint.
