The Scarecrow (1920)

”The Scarecrow“ is a 1920 silent slapstick comedy short film written and directed by Edward F. Cline and Buster Keaton.

At daybreak on a bright sunny day, in a one room house, a Farmhand and his Housemate get ready for another day working on the farm. The Farmhand has toothache. With his Housemate’s assistance, the annoying tooth is pulled out by tying a piece of string between the tooth and a door handle, then slamming the door shut.

After breakfast the pair set the house in order then leave for work. On the way, they bump into the Farmer’s Daughter. Both are vying for her affection. They almost come to blows before the Father and farm owner breaks it up.

The Farmer’s Daughter shows the Housemate her dance moves, while the family dog eats the pie that she has made for her Father. The Farmhand is heartbroken to see her arm-in-arm with his rival and walks away.

Later, the ”mad dog“ starts chasing the Farmhand, who tries to outrun Luke the Dog, that he mistakenly believes is rabid. Running from the Dog, the Farmhand races around brick walls, jumps through windows. The pair end up atop the ruins of an old farmhouse, and the Farmhand falls into a hay thresher that rips off most of his clothes.

Terrified of the unfolding events, the Housemate goes to purchase a variety of medicines and gauzes to assist the Farmhand.

The chase eventually concludes with the Farmhand and the dog calling a truce amidst a huge pile of hay, the Farmhand having lost most of his clothes in the process. Meanwhile, the Farmer’s Daughter is still dancing away. She accidentally kicks her father in the jaw before fainting upon the sight of the Farmhand Buster in his underwear.

Her Father chases him, crashing into his Housemate in the process. The Farmhand takes refuge in the fields, and borrows a scarecrow’s clothes. He then trips into a kneeling position while tying his shoes, and the Farmer’s Daughter believes he is proposing marriage.

They speed off on a motorcycle, with his Housemate and the Farmer in hot pursuit. The Housemate is knocked down by a car in the road in the process, and uses the gauze and splints that he purchased for the Farmhand on himself.

Scooping up a minister during the chase, the Farmhand and the Farmer’s Daughter are married on the speeding motorcycle and splash into a stream, where they are pronounced man and wife.
