“The Phantom of the Opera” is a 1925 silent horror film directed by Rupert Julian, and uncredited Lon Chaney, Ernst Laemmle and Edward Sedgwick, written by Frank M. McCormack, Elliott J. Clawson (adaptation), Raymond L. Schrock (adaptation), Bernard McConville (treatment), Jasper Spearing (treatment), Richard Wallace (additional comedy material), Walter Anthony (titles) and Tom Reed (titles), based on the 1910 Gothic horror novel “Le Fantôme de l’Opéra” by Gaston Leroux.

At the Paris Opera House, Comte Philippe de Chagny and his brother, the Vicomte Raoul de Chagny attend a production of Faust, where the latter’s sweetheart, Christine Daaé, may sing.

The former management sold the opera house. While leaving, they tell the new managers about the Opera Ghost, a phantom who is “the occupant of box No. 5”.
Mme. Carlotta, the prima donna receives a letter from “The Phantom,” demanding that Christine replace her the following night.

The next evening, Christine substitutes for Carlotta. During the performance, the managers are startled to see, seated in Box 5, a figure who later disappears. Simon Buquet finds the body of his brother, stagehand Joseph Buquet.

The following evening, a defiant Carlotta sings. During the performance, the Phantom drops the chandelier hanging from the ceiling onto the audience, killing people. Christine meets the Phantom, who introduces himself as Erik and declares his love. Christine faints and he carries her underground.

The next day, while playing his organ, Christine playfully tears off the Phantom’s mask, revealing his deformed face. Enraged, the Phantom declares she’s his prisoner now.

Raoul rushes to her dressing room and meets the man in the fez again. He is actually Inspector Ledoux, a secret policeman who has been tracking Erik since he escaped as a prisoner from Devil’s Island. After finding the secret door in Christine’s room, the two men enter the Phantom’s lair. They end up in a torture chamber of his design. Philippe also finds his way into the catacombs looking for his brother but is eventually drowned by Erik.

The Phantom subjects Raoul and Ledoux to intense heat. He then locks them in with barrels of gunpowder and causes the room to flood. Christine begs Erik to save Raoul, promising him anything in return, even becoming his wife. This causes the Phantom to save Raoul and Ledoux.

A mob led by Simon Buquet infiltrates Erik’s lair. As they approach, the Phantom attempts to flee with Christine. Raoul saves Christine while Erik, in one last act of twisted showmanship, frightens the crowd by pretending to hold some kind of lethal entity in his clenched fist only to reveal an empty palm before he is swarmed and killed by the mob and thrown into the Seine. Raoul and Christine later go on their honeymoon in Viroflay.

Am nächsten Abend singt eine trotzige Carlotta. Während der Aufführung lässt das Phantom den von der Decke hängenden Kronleuchter auf das Publikum fallen, wobei Menschen ums Leben kommen. Christine begegnet dem Phantom, der sich als Erik vorstellt und ihr seine Liebe gesteht. Christine fällt in Ohnmacht, und er trägt sie in den Keller.

Am nächsten Tag reißt Christine, während er auf seiner Orgel spielt, dem Phantom spielerisch die Maske vom Gesicht und enthüllt sein entstelltes Gesicht. Wütend erklärt das Phantom, dass sie nun seine Gefangene sei.

Raoul eilt in ihre Garderobe und trifft dort erneut auf den Mann mit dem Fes. Es handelt sich tatsächlich um Inspektor Ledoux, einen Geheimdienstmitarbeiter, der Erik seit seiner Flucht als Gefangener von der Teufelsinsel auf der Spur ist. Nachdem sie die Geheimtür in Christines Zimmer gefunden haben, betreten die beiden Männer die Höhle des Phantoms. Sie landen in einer von ihm entworfenen Folterkammer. Auch Philippe findet auf der Suche nach seinem Bruder den Weg in die Katakomben, wird dort jedoch schließlich von Erik ertränkt.

Das Phantom setzt Raoul und Ledoux glühender Hitze aus. Dann sperrt er sie zusammen mit Fässern voller Schießpulver ein und lässt den Raum überfluten. Christine fleht Erik an, Raoul zu retten, und verspricht ihm dafür alles, sogar, seine Frau zu werden. Daraufhin rettet das Phantom Raoul und Ledoux.

Ein von Simon Buquet angeführter Mob dringt in Eriks Versteck ein. Als sie näher kommen, versucht das Phantom, mit Christine zu fliehen. Raoul rettet Christine, während Erik in einem letzten Akt verdrehter Theatralik die Menge erschreckt, indem er vorgibt, eine tödliche Kreatur in seiner geballten Faust zu halten, nur um dann eine leere Handfläche zu zeigen, bevor er von der Menge überrannt und getötet und in die Seine geworfen wird. Raoul und Christine verbringen später ihre Flitterwochen in Viroflay.
