”Charlie Chan in Rio“ is a 1941 mystery film directed by Harry Lachman. The screenplay by Samuel G. Engel and Lester Ziffren is based on the character ”Charlie Chan“ created by Earl Derr Biggers.

In Rio de Janeiro, nightclub singer Lola Dean accepts the proposal of Clarke Denton, then hosts a celebratory dinner for their acquaintances, Ken and Joan Reynolds, Grace Ellis and Bill Kellogg.

Lola then performs her act, which is watched by Honolulu detective Charlie Chan, his son Jimmy and Rio de Janeiro police chief Souto, who are there to arrest Lola for the murder of Manuel Cardozo in Honolulu. Chan decides to arrest Lola quietly at her home.

After she leaves the club with Clarke, she follows the advice of her secretary, Helen Ashby, and visits Alfredo Cardozo, a noted psychic. Alfredo drugs his patients, and after Lola is drugged, Alfredo records her confessing to killing Manuel because she was in love with him and he would not leave his wife for her.

On the way home, Lola persuades Clarke to elope that evening with her. Chan, Jimmy and Souto arrive, and Lola is found in her bedroom, stabbed to death, with a broken brooch lying next to her. Helen tells Chan about Lola’s visit to Alfredo and about the persistent attentions of Paul Wagner. Souto has the two men brought in. Wagner admits that Lola was his ex-wife. Alfredo plays the recording of Lola’s session.

Chan discovers that the pin of the brooch in Lola’s room is broken off and deduces that it is imbedded in the killer’s shoe. While Chan and Souto investigate, Jimmy finds jewelry taken from Lola’s room in the room of Rice, the butler. Rice admits to stealing the items but denies killing Lola, and before he can name the murderer, the lights go out and he is shot.

Chan then finds the brooch pin in Helen’s shoe and suggests that Alfredo put her in a trance to make her confess. Although Alfredo protests that he killed Lola and Rice to avenge his brother, Helen confesses that she committed the murders because she is actually Barbara Cardozo, Manuel’s widow. Helen had wanted to take Lola and the recording to the police the next day, but her elopement with Clarke would have enabled Lola to escape. Rice saw her with Lola’s body, and Helen killed him to keep him quiet. Souto arrests Helen, after which Chan informs Jimmy that he has been drafted into the army, and Jimmy replies that the war will be a cinch with him in it.

Nachdem sie mit Clarke den Club verlassen hat, folgt sie dem Rat ihrer Sekretärin Helen Ashby und besucht Alfredo Cardozo, einen bekannten Hellseher. Alfredo betäubt seine Patienten mit Drogen, und nachdem Lola betäubt ist, nimmt Alfredo auf, wie sie gesteht, Manuel getötet zu haben, weil sie in ihn verliebt war und er seine Frau nicht für sie verlassen wollte.

Auf dem Heimweg überredet Lola Clarke, noch am selben Abend mit ihr durchzubrennen. Chan, Jimmy und Souto kommen an, und Lola wird in ihrem Schlafzimmer erstochen aufgefunden, neben ihr liegt eine zerbrochene Brosche. Helen erzählt Chan von Lolas Besuch bei Alfredo und von den hartnäckigen Annäherungsversuchen von Paul Wagner. Souto lässt die beiden Männer vorführen. Wagner gibt zu, dass Lola seine Ex-Frau war. Alfredo spielt die Aufzeichnung von Lolas Sitzung ab.

Chan entdeckt, dass die Nadel der Brosche in Lolas Zimmer abgebrochen ist, und schließt daraus, dass sie im Schuh des Mörders steckt. Während Chan und Souto ermitteln, findet Jimmy in dem Zimmer von Rice, dem Butler, Schmuck, der aus Lolas Zimmer gestohlen wurde. Rice gibt zu, die Gegenstände gestohlen zu haben, bestreitet jedoch, Lola getötet zu haben, und bevor er den Mörder nennen kann, gehen die Lichter aus und er wird erschossen.

Chan findet dann die Brosche in Helens Schuh und schlägt Alfredo vor, sie in Trance zu versetzen, damit sie gesteht. Obwohl Alfredo protestiert, dass er Lola und Rice aus Rache für seinen Bruder getötet habe, gesteht Helen, dass sie die Morde begangen hat, weil sie in Wirklichkeit Barbara Cardozo ist, Manuels Witwe. Helen wollte Lola und die Aufnahme am nächsten Tag zur Polizei bringen, aber ihre Flucht mit Clarke hätte Lola die Flucht ermöglicht. Rice sah sie mit Lolas Leiche, und Helen tötete ihn, um ihn zum Schweigen zu bringen. Souto verhaftet Helen, woraufhin Chan Jimmy mitteilt, dass er zum Militär eingezogen wurde, und Jimmy antwortet, dass der Krieg mit ihm ein Kinderspiel sein wird.
