Dr. Charles Taylor shows up at the Institute of Neuro-Science to discuss his “new approach to plastic surgery.” A heat-impervious, moldable plastic that adheres perfectly to human flesh. He hopes to conduct his first transplant, but is rejected by Dr. Chambers and the board on ethical grounds because he plans on patenting his technique to personally profit from it.

Norma Borden, an asylum patient, sneaks into the back of Taylor’s car and hides. After his lab assistant and girlfriend, Alma Woods, leaves for the evening, Norma finally makes her presence and intent known. Four years earlier, an oil lamp exploded in her face, hideously scarring her. Norma conceals the fact she’s a patient from the doctor, instead claiming she’s simply too poor to afford plastic surgery. When Dr. Taylor tries to explain a series of tests must be performed before the operation and it will take some time, Norma threatens suicide if he doesn’t work on her right then and there. Taylor relents. Norma heals amazing quickly and the operation is a success … or at least it appears that way at first.

Norma escapes. She’s unstable, prone to violence and considered extremely dangerous. Dr. Chambers lies to police detectives Mandel and Alec, telling them Norma is harmless. They don’t buy his story, but they start searching, joined by Inspector Hopkins.

Norma breaks a bottle over Dr. Taylor’s head, steals some money, his car, a special moisturizer needed to keep her new plastic grafts from deteriorating, and heads for the city. Her first stop is a boutique to buy clothes and make-up, and then a beauty parlor for a fashionable new hair cut. With her transformation now complete, she’s a beauty that turns heads everywhere she goes. Knowing the police will be out looking for her, she answers a classified ad and takes a bus to a resort hotel out of town, where she’s able to easily secure work as a waitress.

Now going by the name “Nora Black,” Norma quickly attracts the attention of men, including her sleaze-bag boss, Mr. Polack, who tries to blackmail her into a friends-with-benefits type scenario. A rich playboy, Matt Wilder, is willing to marry her. When the cops start snooping around, Norma takes Matt up on his offer of marriage, with hopes of running off to Paris with him. Things don’t go quite as planned and several murders follow.

Norma verschweigt dem Arzt, dass sie Patientin ist, und behauptet stattdessen, sie sei einfach zu arm, um sich eine plastische Operation leisten zu können. Als Dr. Taylor ihr erklärt, dass vor der Operation eine Reihe von Tests durchgeführt werden müssen und dies einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen wird, droht Norma mit Selbstmord, wenn er sie nicht sofort operiert. Taylor gibt nach. Norma heilt erstaunlich schnell und die Operation ist ein Erfolg … zumindest scheint es zunächst so.

Norma flieht. Sie ist labil, neigt zu Gewalttätigkeit und gilt als äußerst gefährlich. Dr. Chambers belügt die Polizeibeamten Mandel und Alec und behauptet, Norma sei harmlos. Sie glauben ihm nicht, beginnen aber gemeinsam mit Inspektor Hopkins mit der Suche.

Norma schlägt Dr. Taylor eine Flasche über den Kopf, stiehlt Geld, sein Auto und eine spezielle Feuchtigkeitscreme, die sie benötigt, um ihre neuen Hauttransplantate vor dem Verfall zu schützen, und macht sich auf den Weg in die Stadt. Ihre erste Station ist eine Boutique, wo sie Kleidung und Make-up kauft, dann ein Schönheitssalon, wo sie sich eine modische neue Frisur zulegen lässt. Mit ihrer nun vollständigen Verwandlung ist sie eine Schönheit, die überall, wo sie hingeht, die Blicke auf sich zieht. Da sie weiß, dass die Polizei nach ihr suchen wird, antwortet sie auf eine Kleinanzeige und fährt mit dem Bus zu einem Resort-Hotel außerhalb der Stadt, wo sie leicht eine Stelle als Kellnerin findet.
