“Open Secret“ is a 1948 film noir crime thriller directed by John Reinhardt and written by Henry Blankfort Max Wilk (story) and Ted Murkland (story).

Newly-weds Paul and Nancy Lester arrive in the city, to stay with Paul’s army buddy Ed Stevens but, by the next morning, Ed has not returned, and the apartment has been burgled. Nancy finds some racist pamphlets.

Someone calls, saying that Ed wants to meet. Paul goes alone. As he leaves, Larry Mitchell from “Snap Magazine,” tells him that Ed has some important information. Mitchell and Paul both wait for Ed who does not show up.

At the apartment, a man enters, Nancy screams, and he runs off. Later, Paul reports the events to police sergeant Mike Frontelli.

A tire is slashed on Strauss’s car. Strauss tells Paul and Nancy that his car has been vandalized three times as part of a neighborhood antisemitic campaign. Paul helps him change the tire.

Sgt. Frontelli summons Paul to the morgue. He identifies Ed’s body. After Ed’s funeral, Paul and Nancy tell Ed’s landlady, Mrs. Tristram, that they will be leaving the next day. Paul tells Nancy he thinks Ed may have been framed.

While pretending to be one of the group, Ed had photographed them with a concealed camera in order to expose their activities.

Nancy goes to the camera shop to pick up Paul’s photos but, after Harry’s assistant, Ralph, sees a shot of two people painting “Jew” on the window of the store among the photos, he tells her they are not ready yet. However, Harry finds them and gives them to Nancy. Ralph goes to the apartment to get the photos, but Paul won’t return them. Paul finds the incriminating pictures Ed has taken of the group’s racist activities. Paul recognizes Locke, and goes to see Mrs. Locke, who tells him, despairingly, she saw Ed, Locke and Mace run down Fisher with Mace’s car.

Paul promises Mrs. Locke that he will protect her. Locke enters, gun drawn, Paul hits him with a vase. They struggle but Paul is overpowered by Mace.

Harry tells Carter that Nancy gave him the prints and negatives for safekeeping. At the shop, Harry tricks Hill, his captor, and they have a fistfight. Frontelli arrives and arrests the group.

Mitchell calls on Nancy to pick up the photos to use in his magazine’s exposé. However, Mitchell is really Phillips, the ring leader, and Nancy become suspicious of him. Paul and Frontelli arrive as Nancy and Mitchell are struggling for possession of the photos. Mitchell is shot by Frontelli. Frontelli phones the police station and calm returns to the neighborhood.

Das frischvermählte Paar Paul und Nancy Lester kommt in die Stadt, um bei Pauls Armeekameraden Ed Stevens zu wohnen, doch am nächsten Morgen ist Ed nicht zurückgekehrt und die Wohnung wurde ausgeraubt. Nancy findet einige rassistische Broschüren.

Jemand ruft an und sagt, dass Ed sich treffen möchte. Paul geht allein hin. Als er geht, erzählt ihm Larry Mitchell vom „Snap Magazine“, dass Ed wichtige Informationen hat. Mitchell und Paul warten beide auf Ed, der jedoch nicht erscheint.

In der Wohnung kommt ein Mann herein, Nancy schreit und er rennt davon. Später meldet Paul die Ereignisse dem Polizeisergeant Mike Frontelli.

Ein Reifen von Strauss’ Auto wird zerstochen. Strauss erzählt Paul und Nancy, dass sein Auto im Rahmen einer antisemitischen Kampagne in der Nachbarschaft bereits dreimal vandalisiert wurde. Paul hilft ihm, den Reifen zu wechseln.

Sergeant Frontelli ruft Paul in die Leichenhalle. Er identifiziert Eds Leiche. Nach Eds Beerdigung teilen Paul und Nancy Eds Vermieterin, Mrs. Tristram, mit, dass sie am nächsten Tag abreisen werden. Paul sagt Nancy, dass er glaubt, Ed sei möglicherweise hereingelegt worden.

Während er vorgab, zu der Gruppe zu gehören, hatte Ed sie mit einer versteckten Kamera fotografiert, um ihre Aktivitäten aufzudecken.

Nancy geht zum Fotogeschäft, um Pauls Fotos abzuholen, aber nachdem Harrys Assistent Ralph unter den Fotos eine Aufnahme von zwei Personen sieht, die „Jew“ (Jude) auf das Schaufenster des Ladens schreiben, sagt er ihr, dass sie noch nicht fertig sind. Harry findet sie jedoch und gibt sie Nancy. Ralph geht zur Wohnung, um die Fotos zu holen, aber Paul will sie nicht zurückgeben. Paul findet die belastenden Fotos, die Ed von den rassistischen Aktivitäten der Gruppe gemacht hat. Paul erkennt Locke und geht zu Mrs. Locke, die ihm verzweifelt erzählt, dass sie gesehen hat, wie Ed, Locke und Mace Fisher mit Maces Auto überfahren haben.

Paul verspricht Mrs. Locke, dass er sie beschützen wird. Locke kommt mit gezogener Waffe herein, Paul schlägt ihn mit einer Vase. Sie kämpfen, aber Paul wird von Mace überwältigt.

Harry erzählt Carter, dass Nancy ihm die Abzüge und Negative zur Aufbewahrung gegeben hat. Im Laden trickst Harry Hill, seinen Entführer, aus, und es kommt zu einer Schlägerei. Frontelli kommt hinzu und verhaftet die Gruppe.

Mitchell bittet Nancy, die Fotos abzuholen, um sie für die Enthüllungsgeschichte in seinem Magazin zu verwenden. Allerdings ist Mitchell in Wirklichkeit Phillips, der Anführer der Bande, und Nancy wird misstrauisch. Paul und Frontelli kommen hinzu, während Nancy und Mitchell um den Besitz der Fotos kämpfen. Mitchell wird von Frontelli erschossen. Frontelli ruft die Polizei und es kehrt wieder Ruhe in der Nachbarschaft ein.
